NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 5-alarm fire in Brooklyn on Friday night left two people dead.
The blaze started at a three-story building on Covert Street in Bushwick around 9 p.m. Firefighters struggled to knock down the flames, which quickly spread to a second building.
The fire was brought under control around 10:30 p.m.
"It was very bright colored. I felt the heat all the way across the street, right in front of my eyes. I mean, the heat was just so intense. The house just started deteriorating and breaking down on its own," witness Richard Nelson told CBS 2's Derricke Dennis.
Dennis reported that a 43-year-old man was among the dead.
One other person was also said to be injured in the fire. Two firefighters were also hurt battling the blaze in the five-unit apartment.
Officials have not yet determined the cause of the blaze.
