49ers' Rogers: Jets' Defense Quit In Blowout

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- We're just four games into the season, and already there's talk of the Jets not giving their all.

According to San Francisco 49ers cornerback Carlos Rogers, Rex Ryan's defense quit during New York's 34-0 blowout loss on Sunday.

"It kind of seemed like, after a while they just, looking at their defense, they didn't want to be out there," Rogers told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Tuesday. "And after that it's like, man, these guys don't really want to play the game. You know, it's pretty much over."

WFAN co-hosts Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton took a look at some of the game tape, concluding there could be something to Rogers' assertion.

Esiason pointed to three plays: Mario Manningham's 28-yard reverse, a gain aided by three missed tackles; Colin Kaepernick's touchdown run in the second quarter, where pursuer Sione Pouha appeared to stop short; and an unblocked Bart Scott coming up behind 49ers running back Kendall Hunter without attempting to make a tackle.

"That's not Sione Pouha," said Esiason. "That's not who he is as a player at all."

"You could see it happening," said Rogers. "It kind of shocked me because a lot of guys on (our) sideline were saying, 'They don't want to tackle, they don't want to do this, they don't want to do that.' "

Rogers said he was shocked because of Ryan's reputation for running an all-out defense. The Jets allowed 245 rushing yards to San Francisco, a contributing factor to the coach's foul mood after Sunday's meltdown.

"That's a Rex Ryan defense," said Rogers. "That's a Rex Ryan team ... and his defense, you know, plays throughout. That was the shocking point about it."

Ryan disputed the notion on Wednesday.

"Certainly we didn't play well," said Ryan. "It's obvious we didn't play to his standards either. I think we have a reputation in this league of being a tremendous defense. We didn't play that way. But as far as us quitting, there's no way. That wasn't the case."
