2014 Veterans Day Events In New York City
Veterans Day has been celebrated since 1919, when Woodrow Wilson declared Nov. 11 a national holiday. The largest event in the country commemorating our veterans is America's Parade, which takes place right here in New York City. To show your support for our troops and what they've done for our country, head to one of these events around town.

The largest Veterans Day event in the nation brings veterans from all states to New York. Over half a million spectators are expected. The theme for this year's parade is "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave" in honor of the 200th anniversary of the "Star Spangled Banner." March in the parade or simply cheer along the sidelines to show your support for the hundreds of thousands of men and women that have given and are giving their time and lives for our country.

In an annual ceremony, the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum honors veterans of every war by hosting military veterans for free on the flight deck of the ship. Air demonstrations are often a part of the day. The playing of Taps and commemorative wreaths are also usually part of the ceremony. Visitors to the museum are invited to tour the ship and other military vehicles.

The Band of Pride Tribute is a non-profit organization that brings together young musicians for this annual day-before-Veterans-Day event. Band of Pride Tributes take place in both New York and San Diego. This year, they commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. Student marching bands from all across the nation will be participating in this celebration.

For the eighth year in a row, NY Comedy Festival will present the Stand Up for Heroes event to benefit the Bob Woodruff Foundation. The talented line-up this year includes Louis CK, John Mulaney, John Oliver, Bruce Springsteen and a few surprises. Proceeds of the show will benefit injured military service veterans and their families. More than $21 million has been donated to recipients since the event's start.

In this sixth annual benefit from Arts in the Armed Forces (AITAF), a staged reading will be performed of "Our Lady of 121st Street." The play is a comedy about a community that becomes riled up when the body of a beloved nun had been stolen from the viewing room. Written by Stephen Adly Guirgis and directed by Sam Gold, the performance is free to service members. All proceeds of the performance will go toward AITAF's holiday tour to U.S. bases in Japan and Korea.
