2 Killed In Motorcycle Crash On Gowanus Expressway In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Family and friends are mourning the loss of a Brooklyn couple who were killed in an early morning motorcycle crash.

Candles are now burning underneath the Gowanus Expressway for 30-year-old Jose Chevere and 24-year-old Jalissa Otero.

Around 2 a.m. Friday, the two were riding a Kawasaki motorcycle on the expressway in the area of 17th Street and 3rd Avenue when police said Chevere lost control around a turn and hit a cement wall.

The two flew off the bike and over the guard rail, landing on 17th Street nearly 36 feet below the elevated expressway, police said. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends and family of the victims rushed to scene, many of them too overcome with grief to speak.

"It hurts. She was a good friend," a friend of Otero told CBS 2's Ilana Gold. "You don't know when you're going to lose someone like that."

"I heard the news, I couldn't believe it," another friend told 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa.

"She was a lovely girl, everybody loved her. Down to earth," another friend said. "It's tragic."

Otero's friends said they saw her when she left work at Sunset Bagels in Bay Ridge around midnight and never imagined this outcome. They said she leaves behind a 6-year-old son.

It's still unclear why Chevere lost control. An investigation into the crash is still ongoing.
