1 Dead, 3 Wounded In Two Separate Shootings In Queens
QUEENS, NY (CBS 2) -- A mother is dead and three others are wounded after two separate shootings in Queens.
Neighbors of 39-year-old victim Christina Coleman in Flushing are stunned by the senseless violence.
"Just so close to home and then she's right here, parked in front of her door, never made it to her door and then got shot," said neighbor Rose Miller. "It doesn't make sense."
Residents thought they were hearing 4th of July fireworks when the shooting happened around 5:45 Saturday evening. But the three pops were gunshots.
Coleman was shot in the head inside her car that was parked outside her home on Jewel Avenue in the Pomonok housing project.
"She's a nice person, hard-working mother," said Miller. "Goes to work, comes home. She's a beautiful person."
Police say Coleman's 18-year-old son saw a group approaching his mom's car and told her they had to leave. Before they could, gunshots rang out.
Police believe Coleman's son knew the suspects. He was shot in the chest, but survived.
Those who live in the area say they feel increasingly unsafe as shootings become more commonplace.
"How do you not feel unsafe when everybody and anybody has a pistol," said Kenneth, who declined to give his last name. "And they don't think twice about using it and then we have to live with this on a daily basis."
There was a second shooting earlier in the day on Parsons Boulevard. Two people were shot, one in the stomach and one in the back. Both survived.
Police say the shooting may be drug related. They don't think it's connected to the other deadly shooting.
"We just need to get the guns off the streets," said Kenneth. "It's out of control."
Coleman's son is in stable condition at a Queens hospital. Police have not made any arrests in the two shootings.
