Plans are in the works to end deportation protections for Minnesotans who fled Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.
The Department of Homeland Security recently announced the end to temporary protected status for several countries, including Burma, also known as Myanmar. Minnesota has the country's largest population of Karen people, who've been displaced from their homeland of Myanmar. Our Jason Rantala has local reaction to the news.
As recovery efforts continue, a group here in the Twin Cities is doing all it can to help those overseas.
The earthquake death toll in Myanmar is rising fast as rescue and recovery efforts are hampered by badly damaged infrastructure.
It sent buildings in many areas toppling to the ground, buckled roads, caused bridges to collapse and burst a dam.
U.N. agencies and aid workers prepositioned tons of dry food and dozens of ambulances with mobile medical teams in sprawling refugee camps in Bangladesh.
"Our language is so important for our community. It's part of our Karen identity so that we can preserve and carry on for future generations," said Hsakushee Zan, St. Paul Public Schools Bilingual Educator Lead.
A new language class is coming to St. Paul schools. As David Schuman explains, parents and students in the district expect the classes to strengthen their family bonds.
