Wis. Student, Teacher Hurt When Pool Floor Shatters

JEFFERSON, Wis. (AP) -- A Wisconsin student and gym teacher were injured when they were sucked through a shattered underwater viewing window in a high school's pool.

The window broke while students were using the pool at Jefferson High School Monday afternoon, causing water to flush into a mechanical room. Authorities say gushing water pushed the male student through the broken glass and into the mechanical room.

Superintendent Michael Swartz says the teacher jumped into the water to help the student and was also pulled through the broken window. WISC-TV reports the student was taken by helicopter to University Hospital in Madison. His condition was not available. The teacher was treated for cuts and bruises at a hospital and released.
