Wander Minnesota: Road Trip To Henderson

If you're looking for a relaxing day trip or getaway, there's a little town along the Minnesota River that fits the bill. The main street of Henderson is just a few blocks long, but there are eateries and shops worth a visit. Its proximity to the river is great for those who want to spend some time on the water. Bonus: this weekend is its annual festival, Sauerkraut Days.

Much of the main street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the buildings are well preserved, making for a fun stroll.

Even the Henderson grocer (Wagar's Red Owl) has a very old-time look (and it used to be a general store).

It's hard to imagine a more welcoming liquor store than Henderson Wine & Spirits.

Or a building more inviting than Classical Glass, a stained-glass emporium.

Or this charming art gallery and supply shop: HeArt of Henderson.

There are some fun spots to grab a bite to eat too. The Henderson Roadhaus is a pub and café that serves three meals a day, with many homemade items.

Or there's Toody's Sweet Treats, a deli with sandwiches and pizza, all kinds of ice cream treats, a small selection of candy—and a pharmacy in the back.

If you'd like to make a weekend out of it, make a reservation at the Henderson House bed and breakfast. It's located just uphill from the main street, with beautiful views, but still an easy stroll to the shops and eateries.

And if you need to see a barber? No problem. Henderson has one on its main street. Tiny, but open for business.
