St. Paul police take suspect into custody in hit-and-run that killed a woman

A suspect believed to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run on Thursday has been taken into custody, according to St. Paul police.

Officers stopped an SUV on Interstate 94 near Highway 52 around 3:15 p.m. Saturday. The owner of the car was present and taken into custody without incident, according to police.

Investigators say a woman was hit at the intersection of Aldine Street and St. Anthony Avenue around 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

Shay Bolton lives near the intersection where the woman was killed.

"A screech from the car and then you see it just cruising. That's it right there," said Bolton, while looking at video on her phone.

Her home surveillance video captured a vehicle fitting the SUV's description as it sped by her house around the time the woman was hit. A piece of the vehicle was found on scene. The victim later died from her injuries at Regions Hospital. Bolton said the hit-and-run is one of many examples of dangerous driving on her street.

"Speeding, drag racing, our car was parked here and got hit," said Bolton.

A few years ago, her husband posted a video of vehicles street racing on St. Anthony Avenue. One of the drivers was racing in a bike lane. Bolton said what worries her is that as many as 25 kids live on their block, and they've asked the city for help.

"They just said speeding is everywhere. That was their response," said Bolton. "I don't let my kids bike on the street. I get nervous about them even walking on the street."

Bolton and other neighbors said St. Anthony Avenue has been a problem for so long that they've spent a lot of time thinking of ways it could be fixed.

"There's a lot you could do. You could have speed bumps or raised crosswalks, which do a lot to slow people down," said Justin Kolb.

Kolb also lives near the scene of the hit-and-run. His heart goes out to the victim's family, and he's hoping the driver responsible is brought to justice.

"Whoever did that last night isn't the only person who drives dangerously on this road. It happens all the time," said Kolb.

Neighbors said there is also a lack of streetlights in the area.

They plan to hold a vigil for the woman who died at the scene on Monday at 5:15 p.m.
