South Los Angeles grocery store looted after street takeover, police said

A person was arrested after a grocery store in South Los Angeles was allegedly looted in the aftermath of an apparent street takeover, according to police.

The Los Angeles Police Department said a burglary was reported at 4:41 a.m. Saturday at Superior Grocers in the area of Manchester Avenue and Crocker Street. The caller told authorities it was at the scene of a street takeover, and that multiple suspects were involved.

Authorities said one person was taken into custody for alleged looting.

Video from the scene showed items scattered across the floor at the grocery store.

"To me, it's: Where are the parents? It's always about the parents; the parents are allowing it and the kids are doing it," said one resident who is fed up with the ongoing takeovers across Los Angeles County. 

CBS LA reached out to Superior Grocers for comment but is yet to hear back.

Mayor Karen Bass shared a statement on the incident upon request. In part, it said: "What happened at Superior Grocers is unacceptable. Anyone who participates in a street takeover or commits a crime in connection with one will be held accountable."

The South LA takeover was one of several that took place overnight. In Downey, video showed cars spinning in circles in the intersection of Florence Avenue and Lakewood Boulevard while bystanders pointed lasers in the cars' direction. Another clip shows some drivers coming dangerously close to onlookers, fireworks and a woman falling out of a car doing donuts.
