Snow, Subzero Temps Rearranging Lots Of Plans

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesota Vikings fan Mariah Sisson came all the way from Illinois, leaving cold temperatures for potentially subzero ones.

"This is our first time at the new stadium. We were planning to get here early and check everything out. Planning to get here early and take in the whole experience," Sisson said.

That game day experience will mostly take place indoors. The Vikings announced Friday that many of Sunday's pregame festivities will be moved inside U.S. Bank Stadium -- keeping fans out of what could be the coldest temperatures in decades.

They are not alone when it comes to keeping out of the cold. Knollwood Christian Church in St. Louis Park has had a live nativity scene with 40 volunteers -- along with an assortment of animals -- for the past 20 years.

"Over the years it's kept expanding and expanding to where now we have eight stations that will be all along the frontage road here," said Pastor Brian Lindquist. "We have a camel and a cow and some donkeys and some sheep."

Lindquist says they have never had to cancel or postpone before in two decades, but the forecast forced their hand. They are moving the nativity scene from Friday and Saturday, to next Wednesday and Thursday.

"It's Minnesota," Lindquist said. "It's what you get when you live here."

Speaking of that, Kowalski's Market in Uptown added extra staff Friday, knowing that customers would want to stock up before they settle in.

"A lot of last-minute shopping things like that," said store manager Chris Bergsten. "I expect people to hunker down this weekend for the weather."

Knollwood Christian Church's nativity scene will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on both next Wednesday and Thursday nights.
