Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing In NW Minn., Crashes Into Car
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A driver in northwest Minnesota had an unusual sight in her rearview mirror late Tuesday morning -- a small plane catching up to her on the road.
According to the state patrol, a single-engine private plane took off shortly before noon Tuesday from the Hawley airport with Minot, North Dakota as the intended destination. The engine quit at about 1000 feet, however, so the pilot -- David Gowan, 57, of Minot -- turned the plane around to find an emergency landing spot.
The passenger in the plane, 33-year-old Jon Roise of Minot, spotted a clear landing area on eastbound Highway 10 near milepost 19.
As the plane was making a successful emergency landing, a Ford Fusion -- driven by 39-year-old Corey Ernst of Fargo, North Dakota -- was traveling eastbound on Highway 10 in front of the plane. The plane caught up to her car and the plane's propeller struck the rear of the driver's side before she could drive into the ditch.
There were no injuries. The plane was then pushed into a residential driveway.
The NTSB and FAA are investigating.
