Report: Teen Student Shoots Self At N.D. School

FAIRMOUNT, N.D. (WCCO) -- Classes were canceled Thursday morning after a teenage student shot himself in class in a town just south of Wahpeton, N.D.

According to a report from KXIB-TV in Fargo, the incident happened at about 8:30 a.m. at a K-12 school in Fairmount, N.D.

Principal Jay Townsend told the station that the boy who shot himself survived, though officials believe it was an apparent suicide attempt.

About 110 students attend the school, and the town has a population of roughly 370. It is about 16 miles south of Wahpeton along the North Dakota-Minnesota border.

Townsend said that the boy didn't intend to threaten anyone else, and has been taken to a hospital. His condition is not known, but Townsend said he was conscious and coherent.
