Teen and man killed in north Minneapolis shooting, police say

Police in Minneapolis are investigating after a 14-year-old boy and a man were killed in a shooting on Monday afternoon.

The incident at a home on the 4200 block of Irving Avenue North in the Webber-Camden neighborhood happened around 3:30 p.m., according to police.

The suspect, identified as a 23-year-old man, had been released from the Hennepin County jail earlier on Monday after being arrested on Feb. 15, police said.

According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara, he was arrested on warrants related to fleeing police and being in possession "of a handgun that had been modified with an auto sear so that it could function as a fully automatic weapon."

The man traveled from the law enforcement facility to the home where he fatally shot the boy and the 23-year-old man, according to officials. The man then left the scene.

Police said the teen and man who died were cousins of the suspected shooter.

A grandmother and four children were inside the home at the time of the shooting, police said. They were not injured.

"The family is very distraught. You know, a grandmother with children in the home, that's obviously supposed to be a very safe place," Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said.

Investigators are looking into what motivated the killings.

"We think the arrest, in some way, but there's nothing to indicate his cousins had anything to do with him being arrested," O'Hara said.

Police in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, say officers fatally shot an armed male during an incident where "gunfire was exchanged" on Monday, less than 3 miles from the north Minneapolis shooting. The shooting in the Twin Cities suburb happened near the intersection of Xerxes Avenue North and 56th Avenue North.

O'Hara said the man suspected in the double fatal shooting is the male who was fatally shot by Brooklyn Center officers.

Sources close to the case and court records identified the shooting suspect as Eddie Duncan.

Court records show Duncan was released on bond Monday for a case out of Robbinsdale in which he faced felony charges, including possessing a machine gun, after an officer found a handgun with an extended magazine and a switch that affects the trigger mechanism.

Court documents also show Duncan was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation while in custody to see if he was psychologically fit to stand trial.

The criminal complaint described Duncan as a "threat to public safety."

While Minneapolis officers were investigating the incident on Irving Avenue North, a man with a handgun came to the scene, police said. The man was arrested, though officials don't believe he's involved with Monday afternoon's incident.
