Movie Blog: Miranda July At The Walker This Friday
Miranda July, whose last movie You and Me and Everyone We Know earned the undying devotion of hipsters everywhere, is returning to the Walker Art Center this Friday to present her second feature film, The Future.
July was previously at the Walker a decade ago to present the fruits of her non-feature filmmaking career. Since then, though, she's emerged as a talent to watch. Or not, depending on how much twee your stomach can handle. The stubborn Wes Anderson fan in me insists I can tolerate anything July has to offer, but the preview (posted below) has a couple moments that give me a diabetic attack, though they're buried within what appear to be some great observational humor about the demographic who can't decide how to spend their time between quarter- and mid-life crisis ... so they spend it in a crisis.
The Future, which July both directed and wrote, is about a relatively young couple who are slowly coming to terms with the need to demonstrate some actual responsibility. Rather than focus on their careers or set about having a child, they decide to adopt a cat. Since they can't take it home until its shattered paw heals, they spend the next 30 days trying to make the most of their remaining "selfish" time.
July's scenario looks to volley between skewering the pretentious of the not-quite-young set (i.e. "May I take your jacket?" "It's sort of part of the outfit.") and embodying those same portions (i.e. a mind-clearing conversation with the moon).
July will present The Future on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. Here's the preview.
