Harteau: Body Cams To Be On Officers In All Precincts Next Month

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minneapolis Police Department issued an update Tuesday on the rollout of its body camera program.

In a post on the department's Facebook page, Chief Janee Harteau said that 363 officers have been trained and equipped with the body cameras in the city's first, third and fourth precincts.

This week, officers in the second precinct will be trained. The rollout of the program will then conclude with fifth precinct officers, who will be trained in the third week of October.

In total, nearly 600 officers will be trained and equipped with body cameras in Minneapolis in about a month's time.

Harteau said the department is pleased with the quality of the video and the data storage system. What has yet to be sorted out is what devices work best for keeping the cameras on an officer's uniform.

The chief says she hopes the cameras will be tools to increase public trust in the police.
