Construction season is underway in the Twin Cities, with both sides of a busy stretch of Interstate 35W in the Twin Cities will be closed this weekend.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says the closure will be from 9 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday between Interstate 494 on the Bloomington-Richfield border and the I-35/I-35W/I-35E split in Burnsville.

A detour will be in place from I-35E, to Highway 77 to I-494.

MnDOT says the major closure is needed for bridge replacements, road resurfacing and "other necessary infrastructure updates."

This work is part of the estimated $80 million I-35W improvement project that's slated to be finished in fall 2026, including the replacement of three bridges: Cliff Road, Highway 13 and Burnsville Parkway.

Earlier this month, MnDOT announced its roster of 2025 construction projects for the metro and Greater Minnesota, with 180 road and bridge projects on tap, as well as 51 other infrastructure upgrades.
