Hiawatha To Close Overnight Before Sabo Bridge Reopens
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Sabo bike and pedestrian bridge, which spans Hiawatha Avenue, is expected to reopen to traffic Friday morning, city officials said.
Over the week, crews installed a retrofitted diaphragm plate to the bridge. Officials said the new plate will be monitored for a month to see how it performs.
As work is finished on the bridge, both directions of Hiawatha Avenue between East 26th Street and East 28th Street will close at 8 p.m. Thursday, officials said. Hiawatha is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Friday. Detours will be provided for drivers.
In February, one of the bridge's diaphragm plates fractured, causing a pair of suspension cables to break loose. The incident closed the bridge for some time.
It was concluded in the spring that wind-induced vibrations caused the fracture.
Crews will plan and schedule repairs for the bridge's other diaphragm plates later in the year, officials said.
