SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) — A teenager accused of fatally shooting a man during an attempted robbery in Superior last year has pleaded guilty and avoided a jury trial.

Eighteen-year-old Chance Andrews was charged with shooting the gun that killed 20-year-old Garth Velin. Four others are facing charges.

WDIO-TV reports Andrews pleaded guilty to felony murder, averting the trial that was to begin in Douglas County Tuesday. Prosecutors agreed to recommend 17½ years in prison when he's sentenced Sept. 17.

A criminal complaint says one of the defendants told police the group traveled from Duluth, Minnesota to Superior and that Andrews told her they were going to get some money. A criminal complaint says Andrew claimed he pulled a gun on Velin as they attempted to rob him at his house and that Velin grabbed it and it accidentally fired.
