Gov. Dayton Proclaims Oct. 22 'Lights On Afterschool' Day
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- In support of the important role afterschool programs play in helping young people exceed, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton proclaimed Oct. 22 "Lights On Afterschool" day.
According to Ignite Afterschool officials, students at nearly 200 afterschool programs will be showcasing their accomplishments in afterschool and will be highlighting the diverse range of opportunities afforded to them.
"Lights On Afterschool highlights the rich learning that happens after the school bell rings," Kari Denissen Cunnien, executive director of Ignite Afterschool, said. "It's a time to celebrate afterschool in Minnesota, and also acknowledge that we still have important work to do."
Cunnien says afterschool funding for low-income students is at risk.
"Funding for afterschool programs in Minnesota has decreased by one-third since 2008, and nearly 150,000 young people in Minnesota want to enroll in an afterschool program yet don't have one available to them," she said. "We need to invest in afterschool programs that keep kids safe, help working families, inspire learning, and build skills that prepare young people for life beyond the classroom."
Founded 10 years ago, Ignite Afterschool is a statewide network in Minnesota of funders, program providers, researchers and others dedicated to young people's engagement in afterschool.
