Good (Morning) Questions: Why Do We Get Belly Lint?

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Jason DeRusha answers Good Questions on weeknights at 10 p.m., but the WCCO Morning Show figured you all had some queries when it comes to mornings.

So DeRusha reached into his mailbag and pulled out a few Good (Morning) Questions, and will do so every Friday morning.

Why do we wake up with belly button lint? -- David Grimes in Burnsville, Minn.

A chemist named Georg Steinhauser studied 503 pieces of lint from his own belly button.

He found that some of the little tiny hairs on our chest are scaly and they grow in a circular pattern around the belly button.

Those hairs are scraping the cotton from our clothes all day and overnight. That ends up gathering in the navel.

But it's not just lint in there. Dr. Steinhauser found flecks of dead skin, fat and dust.
