MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Students at Minnewashta Elementary School in Excelsior spent a lot of time last month with their noses in books.
Principal Cindy Andress challenged them to read 500,000 minutes in February. She told the kids if they met their goal, she would sleep on the school's roof.
Well, they met it! They went above and beyond and met the goal in the first two weeks.
So, she issued a second challenge: read one million minutes by the end of February.
The bookworms made it, raising tens of thousands of dollars in the process.
"It's a small price to pay for the $45,000. The students are buying books for their classrooms. So, that what they've doing, adding books to their classroom libraries," Andress said.
Andress plans to welcome the kids back to school Friday morning from the roof.
