Armed man arrested after allegedly assaulting patient at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital, prompting brief lockdown
Police in Edina, Minnesota, say a suspect is in custody after M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital went into a brief lockdown on Tuesday afternoon following reports of an armed person in the facility.
Police say officers were alerted that "a family member of a patient" was seen "armed with a firearm" around 3 p.m.
While searching for the suspect, officers learned he had left the area. He was later located in a different city, where he was arrested and booked into the Hennepin County Jail, pending felony second-degree assault charges, according to the Edina Police Department.
Investigators say the suspect got into a domestic dispute with a patient at the hospital, where he displayed a firearm before assaulting the patient.
Police recovered a firearm from the hospital.
"We are extremely grateful to the quick action of our staff and response by our law enforcement partners. We are actively gathering all facts to complete a full incident investigation with Edina Police," a spokesperson said for the hospital said.
