DeRusha Eats: Sonora Grill At Midtown Global Market
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It costs just $2.50 to grab some grub at one of the Twin Cities' top 10 restaurants.
At Midtown Global Market, the Latin/South American flavors of Sonora Grill have people lining up to taste the creations of Conrado Paredes and Alejandro Castillon.
"This is completely different," Paredes said. "You're not going to find tacos like this in Minnesota."
In this tiny kitchen, the team makes all their own salsas and sauces. Check out the insanely bright and delicious shrimp tacos.
"We call it red tempura," Paredes said. "We make it with salsa in the kitchen."
Paredes said the one thing on the menu he wishes people would be less scared of is the tongue tacos. And these guys cook the tongue for 12 hours in a marinade of peppers.
Sonora Grill's meals may seem simple, but they're incredibly well-executed.
"What's in the recipe is five items," Paredes said. "We don't have crazy recipes. It's simple food -- quality and fresh."
Castillon worked at Bar La Grassa, Solera and Barrio before opening up this place, where the tacos cost $2.50 and are packed with flavor. And packed with meat.
The eggplant fries are so popular that this year, for four days, you'll be able to get them at the Minnesota State Fair.
It's high-quality ingredients and high-quality cooking that makes this counter-service place one of the top 10 of all Twin Cities restaurants.
"This is the new thing," Paredes said. "Fast food, but at the same time good quality, and really affordable."
