Dayton's Tax Man Won't Start Right Away In Minn.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- A Minneapolis tax attorney will lead the Department of Revenue in Gov. Mark Dayton's administration, but probably not until April.
Dayton announced Wednesday he selected Myron Frans, but said his appointee couldn't immediately start full-time. Dan Salomone, a top tax official in Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty's administration, will temporarily stay on.
Frans has been a tax attorney for 27 years and is the CEO of a manufacturing company. He plans to spend the coming months transitioning from the business and into government. The cabinet post will be his first foray into the political arena.
Frans will be a salesman of sorts for Dayton's proposal to raise taxes on Minnesotans with the highest incomes. Dayton wants a new top income tax bracket as part of his state budget fix.
Frans said he aims to enforce existing tax laws as fully as possible.
"My goal is to do what I can to help promote fair enforcement of the revenue laws so that everyone pays their fair share," he said.
Frans, 60, said he plans to participate in policy discussions before starting his new job full-time.
Frans contributed to Dayton's 2010 campaign as well as two other Democrats who sought the office.
