Dayton Irked By Medicaid Conversion Lag In Minn.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Gov.-elect Mark Dayton says a nine-month transition to a new Medicaid health care program carries "enormous financial implications" when state finances are already tight.
Dayton met Monday with a top adviser to GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty and emerged disappointed about the time needed to make the switch. Dayton intends to sign an order giving Minnesota access to federal money for more-generous health coverage for low-income adults.
But the state human services department says it will take until October to implement because it requires a new claims-paying system and instructions to counties.
Dayton says the extended transition period could mean $300 million less in federal money. The Democrat says he distrusts information he is being given.
Human Services Commissioner Cal Ludeman says the conversion timetable was previously made known to legislators.
