Curiocity: Comedy, Drinks At Firsty Thursdays

Once a month, the comedy stylings of Four Humors Theater is giving us a reason to come downtown, have a drink and most importantly, have a laugh.

Forget about thirsty Thursday, Firsty Thursday has it all -- and more.

Thanks to a partnership with BarFly, on the first Thursday of every month the comedy troupe at Four Humors is bringing a night of cabaret, comedy, music and entertainment to the fourth floor, at The Loft, 711 Hennepin Ave., of the Minneapolis Theater District. Coined as a "monthly excuse to laugh and drink," Artistic Director Jason Ballweber said the evening is aimed to bring people together for a unique and ever-changing experience.

"We have a full bar that's open, what, 10 feet from the audience, so everything's there that we'd want for a good night," he said.

The next Firsty Thursday kicks off with music at 7:15 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.) on June 2. The line-up includes stand-up, a spoken word performance, sketches, live music and more.

"It's a really great opportunity for us because we really love the community aspect of theater, so it's really great to have this venue," Ballweber said.

The concept behind Firsty Thursday is truly what Four Humors is all about, Ballweber said. The theater company started five years ago on the goal of focusing on human stories and the everyday comedy that happens in life.

He said to cap off a night of entertainment, the Firsty Thursday evening concludes with anything from karaoke to local bands closing the night's festivities.

"Once the show's done, we don't leave until the last audience member," Ballweber said.

Four Humors is also preparing for a new show at the Loring Theater in September that looks at the hilarious text given to a life insurance salesman, right before the stock market crash -- a show that paints an awfully familiar picture to the current economic crisis. They'll also be gearing up for the Fringe Festival in August.
