Minneapolis Police Arrest 57 In Holiday DWI Enforcement
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- In an effort to crackdown on drinking and driving, Minneapolis Police officers made 57 DWI arrests during the holiday enforcement campaign.
Roughly 400 law enforcement agencies statewide participated in the DWI enforcement effort, which was conducted by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Office of Traffic Safety.
Sgt. Scott Olson, of the Minneapolis Traffic Enforcement Unit, said the campaign was a reminder for those celebrating New Year's Eve to avoid risking drinking and driving.
"If you can't make a safe and smart decision to plan for a safe way home, we are going to make sure you face the consequences before you do serious damage," he said in a press release.
Those caught drinking and driving can face losing their license for up to a year, up to $20,000 in legal costs, higher insurance rates and possible jail time.
Authorities say more than 400 people are killed on the roadways with a third of those deaths being alcohol related.
Minneapolis Police officers also issued 200 seat belt citations.
