No injuries reported after Tri-Rail train slams into car in Opa-locka, officials say
A Tri-Rail train slammed into a car in Miami-Dade early Thursday morning, forcing officials to shut down a stretch of tracks for hours while the incident was under investigation.
Officials said that Tri-Rail train P608 reported hitting the car in the area of Ali Baba Avenue and NW 22nd Avenue just after 6:30 a.m.
Tri-Rail officials said that a bus bridge was immediately set up between the Golden Glades and Opa-locka train stations while the tracks were closed to rail traffic.
The car was cleared of the tracks, but Tri-Rail officials said that there was a downed cable from a damaged utility pole. Crews from Florida Power and Light (FPL) were needed to remove the cable from the area.
About an hour after the incident occurred, officials said the involved train was allowed to advance to Golden Glades to detrain the passengers.
One of the tracks was opened to run trains at walking speed around 8 a.m., and both tracks were fully reopened just before 9:30 a.m.
Tri-Rail said there were 80 passengers on board at the time, and no injuries were reported.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said no injuries were reported to anyone in the vehicle when it was hit.
