Suspect Accused Of Shooting NMB Police Officer Denied Bond

NORTH MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) -- A man arrested for reportedly injuring a North Miami Beach police officer has been denied bond.

Elton Bandoo, 26, appeared before a Miami-Dade County judge Saturday – one day after allegedly opening fire and striking North Miami Beach Police Officer Lino Diaz.

"Mr. Bandoo, it looks like you have been arrested for attempted murder of a law enforcement officer," said Miami-Dade County Circuit Court Judge Victoria S. Sigler during a bond hearing.

According to court documents, North Miami Beach Police Department's Special Response Team was serving a federal search warrant at Bandoo's home for unemployment fraud Friday morning.  And things took a very dangerous turn at the home off Northeast 160th Street and 8th Avenue.

Police were on guard because one of the suspects may have been seen in a rap video on YouTube waving a gun around and appearing to taunt police officers.

"We were aware of this video and we used it in our pre planning," said North Miami Beach Police Department public information officer Kathy Katerman.

According to the arrest affidavit, detectives went to the front door of the home and "knocked three to four times announcing in a loud and clear voice, 'North Miami Beach Police Department, search warrant, search warrant.'"

Despite several such announcements, police said Bandoo fired several shots from a .40 caliber firearm, striking Diaz in the arm and leg.

Friday evening, a woman at the home said her son, who she refused to name, has done nothing wrong.

"They're trying to portray him like he's a bad person. He's not. He's an honor roll student. He's a good kid," said the unidentified woman.

Bandoo, who was transported to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, told detectives, "he was sleeping and he heard a lot of noise, then heard his mother screaming, 'I think we're getting robbed.  I think we're getting robbed.'  The defendant continued to say that he picked up a .38 caliber firearm."

"You're going to be held in jail at this time without any bond in the case because of the charges," said Judge Sigler.

Officer Diaz remains at Jackson Memorial Hospital and is expected to be released in a few days.

"Lino Diaz has always wanted to be a police officer," said Suhaill Diaz, Diaz's sister.  "He is the type of person that he is a warrior, and he is a fighter."
