Sports Agenda for Wednesday (5/16/12)
Big Story:
Hmm, let's see, the Marlins won last night and finished the homestand above .500….things are quiet with the Fins and Canes….oh wait…the Heat lost. Someone wrote that they were in big trouble yesterday….can't remember who!
Quote of the Day:
"The time bomb is ticking and no one is listening. Our future is fading; is there any hope we'll survive? Still, we ravage the world that we love. And the millions cry out to be saved. Our endless maniacal appetite left us with another way to die. Can we repent in time?" – David Draiman, on global warming.
Heat: (off Wednesday, thank God)
Let the national pundits have their fun with this one….you know it's coming.
LeBron choked, LeBron can't handle the pressure, LeBron cowered.
Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah.
Does LeBron have to should some of the blame in Game 2, sure, but a lot should go to his teammates and Coach Erik Spoelstra.
Let's look at some stats from last night shall we?
No one on the Heat not named LeBron or Wade scored more than 5 points last night.
Are you kidding me?
LeBron's last 8 possessions: missed 3, no touch, assist, no touch, shot blocked, missed 2 FTs, pass to Wade for miss layup, screen.
Here's how bad the Heat shot last night.
Outside of LeBron and Wade, the rest of the team shot a combined 9 of 34 or 26 percent from the field.
Are you freaking kidding me?
Hell I could probably get out there and hit 26 percent.
I've written about it over and over again this season…this team will not win if they have to completely rely on LeBron and Wade to carry the scoring load.
Last night was a great example.
Oh yeah, one other thing that stunned me from last night….
The Heat shot 6 percent from behind the 3-point line!?!?!?
I didn't leave out a number, it really was 6 percent from last night (1-16).
Remember how I said this team would die if it had to rely on the 3-point shot? Yeah, about that.
There's something interesting here that Oklahoma City did to the Lakers and that Indiana did to the Heat.
Statistically speaking, the worst shot a player can take is a mid-range jumpshot.
They have the lowest percentage of going in.
That's what OKC did to the Lakers, forced them into jumpshots and they killed them.
Miami had to shoot a lot of jumpshots last night, and with their roster, it was as bad as it could be.
So what are the Heat to do at this point?
Pray!
No seriously, there is no real solution here.
Unless the less athletically gifted Chalmers, Haslem, Turiaf, and Battier decide to shoot the ball well, this team is toast.
But also remember this.
It was just one game and this series is a long way from being over.
Plus, Indiana played a decent game and could still only beat the big two and the scrubs by 3 points.
But they won and now the Heat have lost home court advantage which in a series like this is huge.
Marlins: (@ Atlanta Braves, 7:10 p.m., Fox Sports Florida)
Seeing as how my grandmother is a HUGE Atlanta Braves fan, I have to tread lightly here.
Last night, the Marlins finally got the monkey off JJ's back by giving him his first win of the season.
Still, J-Squared struggled in the first inning and Miami still can't hit the broad side of a bus when they have runners in scoring position.
Playing the Pirates will usually help though.
The last time the Pirates were significant was in 1992/93 when the Braves knocked them out.
But man, wouldn't you love to have Andrew McCuthen in centerfield?
Kid is hitting .339 for the season.
Imagine him hitting cleanup behind Hanley or vice-versa with Stanton next in the order.
Guh, who would you pitch to?
Anyways, Atlanta is leading the division by a half game.
The Marlins are currently 3.5 games out meaning if they could sweep the Braves, they'd be just 0.5 games out of first.
Yeah, that ain't happening.
Still, Miami could take 2 of 3 in the series before heading to Cleveland.
Yeah, Cleveland is leading the AL Central but here's a fun fact for you….every team in the AL Central has been outscored this season by their opponents.
Yikes.
Football Notes:
The Buffalo Bills signed QB Vince Young as a backup. Maybe he's finally matured a little and can play again…though I doubt it.
Here's what I can tell you about the Bills…through good drafting and free agency, they are the team that can unseat the Patriots.
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver advanced to the finals of Dancing With The Stars.
Dolfans, pay attention, he could be coming this way if the Packers decide to cut his high salary from their books.
The New Orleans Saints still can't come to a deal with quarterback Drew Brees.
Really? One of the best QB's in the league and you don't want to pay him as such? They've always got Chase Daniel.
Here's something disturbing…former Dolphins running back Ricky Williams said there's no link between concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
Given how much he's smoked in his life, it kinda makes sense that he already doesn't have the brain cells to be damaged. (I kid)
And for a fun read, check out this column by Mike Bianchi about FSU & UM and the ACC's woes. Simply put, if they want someone to blame, blame themselves.
