Sports Agenda For Monday (4/4/11)
Big Story:
My alma mater is at the top of the Agenda today. The University of Missouri has hired Miami Hurricanes head basketball coach Frank Haith to coach the Missouri Tigers men's basketball team.
I guess they're thinking…..I don't know what the hell they're thinking. (h/t Harry Doyle)
Umm…I remember Mizzou offering their last coach $2 million plus to stay. You're telling me that couldn't have gotten someone better?
Haith is a former head coach at Texas, so that could be a major reason Mizzou went after him, to open the Texas front in basketball recruiting.
But Haith has only been to the Big Dance once and…umm…yeah…Well, at least at Mizzou, football season is coming.
The Heat won again twice over the weekend, Panthers are, no one cares, and the Marlins are still the Marlins.
Miami Heat: (next game vs. Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday)
The Heat put together a solid weekend of victories over really bad teams. But, a victory is a victory at this time of year. The only problem is that as they continue to win, they're going to be matched up against the New York Knicks in the first round. If the Knicks start to put their heads together, they are going to be a REALLY tough out in the playoffs.
And then there's this…Yahoo! Sports reported that the Heat are considering signing Eddy Curry for the playoffs.
Hang on for a second…..bwahahahahhahahah.
Okay, I'm composed. Curry hasn't played in a few years, but was on the Knicks roster. His former Knicks contract was one of the things that got Isiah Thomas fired from the Knicks. And, Curry is reportedly roughly 350 pounds.
It's true, for his career, 13 points and 5 boards a game, but I'm not sure he can help much.
That said, it is Pat Riley and he did put together the Big Three. He's coached Kareem, Shaq, Mourning, and others, so he knows what the position requires and if he thinks he can get 8-10 minutes a game out of Curry in an emergency, then the Heat have nothing to lose. But it's still a long way from being a done deal.
Panthers:
Okay, the Panthers are having fan appreciation night this Saturday against the Capitals.
I've got a good way of showing fans you appreciate them…..PUT OUT A TEAM THAT MAKES FANS WANT TO COME TO A GAME!!!
Well, they might give away some free stuff, so if you need some rags to clean up with around the house, you might be able to grab a shirt or two for free!
Marlins: (off, next game Tuesday vs. Nationals 7:05pm)
So the Marlins opened up a series against an undermanned New York Mets pitching staff and proceeded to lay a massive egg.
In the rubber match of the series on Sunday, the Marlins pitching staff was beaten like a government mule. The Mets stomped a mudhole in Javier Vazquez and then walked it dry. He gave up 7 runs in 2 1/3 innings and gave up 2 homers. His ERA for the season stands at 15.43. Not a good outing for a guy the Fish were hoping would finally put things together after a bad year last year with the Yankees.
The Nationals travel to South Florida starting Tuesday. The Marlins will throw out Anibal Sanchez on Tuesday and Chris Volstad on Wednesday. Then on Thursday, the Marlins will probably win when ace Josh Johnson takes the mound.
NFL:
The Antitrust case filed by Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and others, will head to court Wednesday. Then we have to hurry up and wait for a decision from the federal court, which could take days, weeks, or months. But, the Draft will still be held.
I had been leaning towards the Dolphins taking Mark Ingram, running back Alabama, but the more I've thought about it, the more I'm not sure he's the guy to take there. I don't think there's a receiver who warrants a pick there, so if the Fins can't trade down and pick up a second round pick, I've got to say you go offensive line there. I would lean towards either Mike Pouncey, guard, or tackle Gabe Carimi if they're available. Or, if someone like Robert Quinn or Aldon Smith tumble, I would give serious thought to adding one of them to the linebacking corps and turn em loose with Cameron Wake.
