Playboy is moving its headquarters from Los Angeles to Miami Beach, opening new club

Playboy plans to relocate its global headquarters from Los Angeles to Miami Beach and open a Playboy club there.

The Miami Beach headquarters at the top of a luxury office building will include studios to support Playboy's "growing creator network," and the club will have a restaurant as well as a members-only section inspired by the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles, the company said Thursday in a statement.

"Miami Beach is among the most dynamic and culturally influential cities in the country, making it the ideal home for Playboy's next chapter," Ben Kohn, CEO of Playboy Inc., said in the statement.

The plan is to have Playboy move in and open in September 2026.

Miami Beach is welcoming the brand with open arms

Officials told CBS News Miami they are expecting 200 people to work, play and live in the city as a result of this move.

"For one of the first times in Miami Beach history, we will have a major publicly traded corporation that is headquartered in Miami Beach," said Miami Beach Commissioner Joe Magazine.

The 72-year-old company will be based out of a new office building that sits on Michigan Avenue north of Lincoln Road.

The Miami Beach commissioner Joe Magazine told CBS News Miami he has been in negotiations with the executives for six months.

"They got fed up with LA's anti-business mentality," he said. "And we worked for months to show them both in the state of Florida, but especially here on Miami Beach, how pro-business we are, focusing on economic development."

The office building will not only house the headquarters, but also become a Playboy club.

A concept that real estate mogul Robert Rivani said combines hospitality and business.

"How many amazing things does Miami Beach have? The weather, the beach, the vibe. All the beautiful restaurants and hotels. And I think the lifestyle of Playboy matches very similarly to Miami Beach," said Rivani, who owns the Rivani office Building. "Our beaches are becoming a focal point in the whole world. So why not Miami Beach?"

Rivani purchased the property from the city for $60 million and has since invested an additional $100 million.

The company will move into the penthouse of the building, which he said will be a gateway to the legendary Lincoln Road.

"I'm buying H&M on Lincoln Road, which is one of the most iconic properties on Lincoln Road, in the next week," Rivani said. "And I've personally invested over $150 million because I believe in a comeback story. And I think a comeback story needs affordable housing, great new restaurants. I think it needs more employees for this to really feel like a city that people can live and work, and they can play."

Playboy is no stranger to Miami

Back in the 1960s and '70s, Playboy had a club on Biscayne Boulevard and at one point, had a hotel on 54th Street and Collins Avenue.

People are open to the new neighbors.

"I didn't really know they were still in business. But I think that's pretty cool that they're going to be in Miami Beach because Miami Beach is the same vibe as Playboy," said resident Mario Lombardi.

"If they got a great deal on the real estate part of it and want to move their offices here, I see no reason why they shouldn't," said Rosie Zapata, another resident.

Playboy, from magazine origins to global brand

The first Playboy Magazine was published in 1953, featuring Marilyn Monroe on the cover and in a "Sweetheart of the Month" color nude photo inside.

The first Playboy Club opened in 1960 in Chicago, which was the headquarters of the company at the time, and the company opened up clubs around the world.

In 2020, Playboy ceased publishing its monthly print magazine, sticking instead with online content.
