DAVIE (CBSMiami) – In the wake of Ryan Tannehill's knee injury, the Miami Dolphins needed to bring in another quarterback.
On Tuesday they did just that, signing veteran QB T.J. Yates.
A fifth round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft, Yates spent the majority of his career with the Houston Texans.
He last played in December of 2015, suffering a torn ACL in a game he started against the Indianapolis Colts.
Yates played collegiately at North Carolina, where he still holds the school records for career passing yards (9,377) and single-season passing yards (3,418).
He is the only former University of North Carolina quarterback to start a game in the NFL.
Yates has also started two NFL playoff games, both coming during his rookie season.
He led the Texans to their first ever playoff win in the franchise's first postseason appearance.
It's expected that Yates will serve as backup to Matt Moore when the Dolphins face the New York Jets on Saturday.
