Just days after the Academy of Motion Pictures and Arts announced that disciplinary procedures had began in terms of the "slap heard around the world," when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage at the Academy Awards, Smith has announced his resignation from the Academy. Rick Montanez reports.
Following the immense backlash from his ill-fated slapping of Chris Rock, Will Smith has offered his resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
About 40 minutes after the slap, Smith won the best actor award. He received a standing ovation and proceeded to deliver a six-minute acceptance speech.
Next month, the Academy's board will vote whether to discipline Smith. Punishments may include suspension or expulsion.
Comedian Chris Rock on Wednesday evening briefly addressed being slapped by Will Smith at Sunday's Oscars Ceremony while kicking off a show in Boston.
"I love my friend Chris Rock and believe he handled it like a pro," Schumer said.
Smith publicly apologized to Rock in an Instagram post, stating that his behavior was "out of line" and "not indicative of the man I want to be."
One ticket resale website said it sold more Chris Rock tickets overnight than it had in the past month — and prices also increased.
