The victim had just pulled out cash at a Chase Bank branch located on the 5670 block of Sepulveda Boulevard early Saturday morning.
The witness, a Marine veteran, said that the victim, 24-year-old Matthew Rule, not only stood up to the shooter, but likely saved his life in the process.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:20 a.m. Sunday, in the area of Jefferson Boulevard and Indian Wood Road, according to a release from the Culver City Police Department.
The suspects forced their way into the home early Tuesday morning and stole personal items from the victims inside, police said. No one was hurt.
The suspects were originally connected to an armed robbery that occurred in South Los Angeles, before leading LAPD officers on a pursuit to the Westfield Mall in Culver City, where they were detained after fleeing on foot.
The San Bernardino Sheriff's Department is searching for three suspects who robbed a 71-year-old at gunpoint.
LAPD SWAT teams were on hand to handle the situation which began when the suspect was caught attempting to rob the residence.
The clerk was not seriously hurt.
