Garland Police: 8 People Confirmed Dead After Tornado

GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) — A confirmed tornado struck the southeastern part of Garland Saturday night around 6:45 pm. The tornado hit near IH 30 and President George Bush Turnpike.
At a press conference Sunday morning, Garland authorities announced that eight people have died due to the storm — that is up from five reported killed Saturday night. Initial searches concluded around 6 p.m. Sunday. Police did not find additional victims.
A very preliminary count indicated 11 tornadoes hit the Dallas area Saturday evening, the National Weather Service reported around 9:45 p.m. Saturday. That number is likely to change.
Authorities also said that there are 15 injuries, and none of those injuries appeared serious at the time of the victims were transported.
There were approximately 600 structures damaged in the storm. According to authorities, those structures include single-family and multi-family homes, as well as commercial businesses.
The EF-4 tornado damaged several homes, vehicles and apartments. Affected areas had no power and contained large amounts of debris, police said Sunday night.
Police have decided to reopen several affected areas to the public at 7 p.m. Sunday, including south of I-30 and east of Peninsula Way. The following streets south of Locust Grove will also be reopened:
- Deep Canyon Drive
- Anchor Bay Drive
- Greenbrook Drive
- 5200 to 5300 Kelso Lane
- Blue Cove Drive
- Anchor Cove Circle
- Hollow Bend Lane
- Hidden Court
Police said all hazards may not have been removed from these areas, and residents should abide by roadblocks and officers blocking off some streets in the area.
