Arlington Police Officer Injured, 1 Killed After Car Strikes Cycling Group On Bridge

FORT WORTH, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - An Arlington detective in the Crimes Against Children's Unit was seriously injured, and another cyclist -- 57-year-old Steven Dennis was killed when a motorist struck them from behind.

It happened on the bridge of Dottie Lynn Parkway over West Division in Fort Worth.

The officer, who was later identified as Alan Branch, was riding a bike with members of his church. Police said he's alert and conscious at JPS Hospital surrounded by officers and family.

"Any time one of your own is injured, it's hurtful. It's part of the family. You know, we had officers respond to that scene and when you have officers respond to a scene and realize it's one of their own, it really impacts emotional feelings an officer goes through," said Interim Police Chief for Arlington, Kevin Kolbye.

Police said Branch sustained "several serious injuries" in the crash.

In a statement (see below), the officer's family said they are saddened by the loss of one of the cyclists, who was a close friend to Branch.

"We want to thank the Arlington and North Texas communities for the outpouring of support, prayers, and well wishes. Please continue to lift Alan up in your prayers, as he has a long road ahead of him. We are also deeply saddened at the loss of one of Alan's close friends during this tragedy."

Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be a factor in this accident and the driver of the vehicle remained on scene. Police have not yet said if charges will be filed.

The Fort Worth Police Department is in charge of the investigation.
