Airport police seeking OWI, reckless driving charges in Detroit Metro car crash
The Wayne County Airport Authority Police Department is seeking charges of operating while intoxicated, reckless driving, aggravated assault and malicious destruction of property after a driver crashed into the McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport.
Police provided that information on Friday.
Wayne County Prosecutor's Office previously acknowledged it received a warrant request from airport police, and that a charging decision would be made after the request is reviewed.
The driver was taken into custody after crashing into the terminal on Jan. 23. At the time, the Wayne County Airport Authority reported that the vehicle drove through an entrance and struck a ticket counter. Six people were treated at the scene.
Since the incident, the airport authority looked into permanent barrier options, with temporary barriers already in place.
In a statement to CBS News Detroit earlier this month, airport authority CEO Chad Newton said 9,000-pound cement barriers were installed within a few weeks after the crash. Newton said the barriers were installed on the departure and arrival levels.
"The fact that the 'floor' of each Departures Level is the 'ceiling' of the Arrivals Level presents unique challenges, including weight limitations. We're continuing to work with the airlines and our internal teams to determine what is the most appropriate permanent barrier to prevent a vehicle from driving into the doors again," Newton said.
