Police Fear Booby Traps, Explosives As They Serve 'High Risk' Warrant At Industrial Building

HAMTRAMCK (WWJ) - Police surrounded a building at the Detroit-Hamtramck border Thursday morning — believing there could be drugs, explosives and possibly booby traps inside.

Michigan State Police were assisting the DEA in serving a "narcotics high-risk warrant" at the location on the corner of Ryan Road and Nancy near 6 Mile and the Ryan Correctional Facility.

Reporting from the scene, WWJ Newsradio 950's Mike Campbell said police used a ram to break down the door at the gray industrial building.

Police said, because of concerns about the possible presence explosives, they were proceeding with extreme caution. The bomb squad and a K9 team were present.

MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said getting through the building's reinforced doors safely took hours.

"In this particular case when they were doing it the DEA found out that there were possibilities of having possible explosives inside the building, booby traps, armored guard — which is that armored sheeting that's over the doors  — which makes it a lot harder for a normal narcotics to breach those doors," Shaw said.

A robot was sent in ahead of any officers.

There were no evacuations in the area and no injuries.

The road reopened to traffic at around noon, although DEA officers remained inside the building investigating into the afternoon.

There have been no arrests.
