Sacramento security guard arrested in deadly shooting of burglary suspect at cannabis warehouse

A security guard was arrested in connection with the deadly shooting of a burglary suspect at a cannabis warehouse earlier this month, police said on Wednesday.

The shooting took place in the early-morning hours along Thys Court, off Florin Perkins Road, on May 8. Officers said they found a burglary suspect with at least one gunshot wound. He died at the scene.

The Sacramento County coroner identified the man killed as 22-year-old Kato Mills of Oakland.

An investigation determined another burglary suspect showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound, police said. He was reported to be stable.

The security guard, later identified as 55-year-old Joseph Mills of Sacramento, remained at the scene and was detained.

Surveillance video showed a pack of alleged burglars jumping over a fence and then driving off in a getaway car.

Police said they arrested Joseph Mills on a warrant on Tuesday. He was arrested for voluntary manslaughter and on weapons-related charges, police said.

Joseph Mills' attorney, Allen Sawyer, said Joseph was firing in self-defense when he found himself surrounded and feared for his life.

"This posed a life-threatening situation to any individual, and I hope there is not a rush to judgment and there is a thoughtful review and we take into account what this security guard was facing," Sawyer said.

Sacramento police would not explain why investigators arrested Mills for manslaughter. A spokesperson would not confirm or deny that the burglars were armed.

Court documents show Joseph was charged with manslaughter after investigators determined he killed the burglary suspect "upon a sudden quarrel and heat of passion."

Sacramento police said Joseph Mills and Kato Mills are not related.
