Pat Caputo: Time To Re-Examine The Agony Of Defeat
Vinko Bogataj.
Name ring a bell?
Not really?
The visual, though, is as iconic as any in sports.
He was a ski jumper from Slovenia, who, in 1970, went out of control during a jump and forever became known on ABC's "Wide World of Sports" as the "agony of defeat."
For nearly three decades it was a part of the show's opening.
It was an obscure moment, though. Just another run at a distant ski jumping event in Europe. Bogataj wasn't seriously hurt.
His "agony of defeat" moment generally brings smiles and laughter.
