Teen Admits She Accidentally Started House Fire
BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4) - A 15-year-old girl says she's responsible for an explosion and fire wiped out a home in Brighton on Tuesday.
Kelsey Dean told CBS4 she was grilling outside her home at 3rd and Egbert at about 4 p.m. when the fire broke out. She said she went outside to check the grill three times and then the fourth time flames had gotten out of control and spread to the fence.
Dean said she ran inside to find her father, who was on the couch with an oxygen tank.
"When I saw the flames, I put my dog in my brother's room real quick and then I told my dad to call 911 and trying to see if I could move the grill or anything and I couldn't move it," she said.
Kelsey and her father made it out safely with the family dog.
Minutes later Kelsey's mother Jill came home to find the charred home.
"It was still smoking and flaming in parts, but we lost everything," Jill Dean said.
The family says they had no insurance. The American Red Cross is helping them find temporary shelter.
Officials told CBS4 the home is a total loss.
