Japan Earthquake and Tsunami
• The national Red Cross Disaster Operations Center (DRO) has been activated. They are coordinating communications and efforts with the Japanese Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. (Note that our former Mile High Red Cross CEO Charley Shimanski is now leading this national division.)
• No request for international assistance from Japanese Red Cross at this moment, however, this could change at any time.
• Warehouse in Kuala Lumpur is fully stocked with pre-positioned relief supplies.
• The best way Coloradoans can help is to make a donation to disaster relief at www.coloradoredcross.org/donate.
Hawaii and West Coast Response
• Red Cross is staging cots, blankets and people in different areas of the islands to prepare to open long-term shelters if needed.
• Current evacuation center activity for California chapters:
o 3 Evacuation Centers in Del Norte County
o 4 Evacuation sites on stand-by in San Luis Obispo County
o 2 Evacuation sites on stand-by in Humboldt County
o 1 Evacuation center in Point Arena, Mendocino County
o Santa Cruz is under non-mandatory evacuation and will be identifying an evacuation site shortly
• Southwest Washington Chapter in Vancouver reports first shelter being opened in WA in the town of Ill Waco on the coast.
• There is now an iPhone app that people can download to see a national map of all shelters and evacuations centers. You can also go to www.redcross.org to the lower right corner to access the map as well.
