Lopez, one of the most conservative members of the Chicago City Council, billed himself as a centrist Democrat, and argued Garcia is too "extreme" for the district's voters.
Ald. Ray Lopez (15th) said the violence is centering one commonality, and it's time for Chicago to stop acting like gangs are not connected to all this violence.
More than a fifth of the City Council is now either leaving or has already left mid-term.
"I love my City and, like most Chicagoans, I am sick and tired of watching Chicago flounder at the hands of a rudderless ship," said Lopez, one of Mayor Lori Lightfoot's harshest critics.
