President Biden announced on Tuesday a new policy that could put millions on a pathway to citizenship. It comes just days after the 12th anniversary of DACA, a program that gives undocumented individuals the chance to work and go to school if they were brought to the U.S. as children.
While he declared the program unlawful, Judge Andrew Hanen allowed 580,000 DACA recipients to continue working and living legally in the U.S.
Federal lawmakers want action to protect the program before the new Congress when the GOP is expected to take over the House.
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, is urging lawmakers to save migrant youth from deportation. Supporters of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, said it's now or never to save the program.
