Village of Cary, Illinois declares a State of Emergency after damaging weekend storms

Several communities are still cleaning up after strong storms left significant damage over the weekend

Storms continued overnight Saturday into Sunday after an earlier destructive round, bringing heavy rain and lightning across Chicago and its surrounding suburbs.

The storm damage and power outages prompted the Village of Cary to declare a State of Emergency.

The Cary Fire Protection District said it received more than 100 storm-related calls. Firefighters dealt with downed power lines, trees, and a natural gas leak from damaged equipment and flooding.

Cary fire officials said the most significant damage was in and around the village's downtown area.

In Mount Prospect, powerful winds tore the roof of an apartment building. Portions of it went flying across the parking lot, landing on vehicles, grass, and on sidewalks.

Officials said 60 of the 75 units were damaged.

Public Works crews will be going street by street on Monday morning, surveying damage and clearing debris. Human services and the Red Cross are assisting dozens of residents who are now displaced.

ComEd said they are still working to restore power to nearly 8,000 customers, with power expected by this afternoon.

Some residents on the South Side were left with flooded basements. Dwayne Baxter, a resident in Chicago Lawn, said this was the second time his basement has flooded this summer.

"We just did an insurance claim, all of that, and now we have to go through that same process again," He said. "At some point, someone has to take the initiative to solve this problem."

Baxter wants the city to better manage the sewer system on the South Side.

The impacted areas are bracing for more storms on the way on Monday.
