Webster Police Ask Public For Surveillance Video In Alleged Park Kidnapping

WEBSTER (CBS) -- Webster Police are asking if anyone in the May Park Street area has surveillance video that would help their investigation into an alleged kidnapping that took place there Friday.

A 12-year-old girl reported to police that around 2:30 p.m. a man enticed her to get into his car. "She was taken to what we believe was an undisclosed location in Connecticut where she was sexually assaulted," said Webster Police Chief Michael Shaw.

According to police, the man was white with blonde hair, a short beard, and had a "skinny" face. The car was black with two doors and a light interior.

Police are asking anyone with surveillance video or still pictures from the area of May Street Park between 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, and from the area of Lake Parkway and/or Thompson Road between 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday to reach out by calling 508-943-1212 or emailing crimetips@websterpolice.com.

Kelly Albright can't get the image out of her mind. She was inside the Webster Police station Friday when the family of the 12-year-old girl came in to report she had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted. The young victim was there too.

"The family walked in distraught," Albright said. "The look on the parents' faces, and just the fear and like, the fact that they may have never have seen their daughter again. It was frightening. It was very frightening. The parents were distraught, the little girl was crying."

The girl said she rode her bike to the park to meet a friend when the man told her he needed her help with a friend.

"I did hear the girl say that the perpetrator offered her money if she would deliver money to his girlfriend," Albright said.

After the alleged attack, the girl was "believed to have been dropped off somewhere in the vicinity of Chase Avenue in Dudley, where she ran to a resident's home and contacted her mother," said a statement from police.

Connecticut State Police are assisting with the investigation.

Tuesday night Webster Police canvassed the neighborhood even talking with local kids. Detectives and officers also went door to door. Police say they recovered evidence that will be processed for possible DNA.

"No one is probably going to sleep great at night until we get this person in custody, which I'm confident we will do," said Shaw.

He added at the girl's family is horrified but happy the outcome was not worse.

"I think it's important for parents to have that dialogue with their children about when they go to places when they're not with an adult, how to act, what to do if they're approached by a stranger," said Shaw.
