Some sporting venues in Massachusetts are struggling with drainage after the state has recently been pummeled by heavy rain.

The Brockton Rox of the Frontier League play at Campanelli Stadium along with Brockton Public Schools. Workers at the stadium say the amount of rain has been hard to manage.

"The weather is either your best friend or your worst enemy, so we certainly have had a lot of rain here over the spring, and it makes it tough when it comes down in puddles, but then it's wet for a few days," Communications Director of the Brockton Rox, Alex Tanish, said.

Fields covered in mud

Their infield is a muddy mess. If you step on it, you sink in. The stadium overseeded the field in February, hoping that new grass would grow in nicely. But now the Brockton schools' baseball season has been delayed because the field is unusable.

"The higher amounts of rain you have a buildup underneath and there's nowhere for the water to go quickly, so it just takes time," he said.

The field is so drenched that they had to cancel Saturday's tryout for the Brockton Rox's upcoming season. The good news is that they have time to clean all this up.

Campanelli Stadium officially opens on May 16th, and the Brockton Rox has 48 home games scheduled, along with many other activities. They hope the rain slows down so the field has time to dry out.

"We are certainly working with both the city of Brockton, the school district to make the field the very best it can be for high school athletics, for our season, which comes up in just a few weeks," he said

The maintenance crew is hoping for drier days ahead.
