Daily Talker: Northeastern To Arm Officers With Semiautomatic Rifles

Recent campus attacks spurring Northeastern University police to make a change. The Northeastern Police Department plans to arm its officers with semiautomatic rifles. But, they won't be just walking around campus with them. Police say the weapons will only be used if there's a threat, like an active shooter, not day-to-day.

We're hearing mixed reaction to this plan. The Boston Police Department is even weighing in. In an email to WBZ, Lieutenant Detective Michael McCarthy said in part,"What concerns the BPD is when we hear of certain campus police departments that are nestled within city neighborhoods make decisions like this without including the Boston Police and other community stakeholders from the beginning." Boston Mayor Marty Walsh told us he is worried about "local police like that carrying those rifles."

But, WBZ security analyst Ed Davis thinks police need to be armed with the same weapons as the bad guys.

So, what do you think? Should police officers on college campuses be armed with weapons like this?
